Ishpeming

The Iron Home began publishing on Apr. 9, 1874 by Hiram Morley. It was Republican.

The Weekly Agitator began publishing on Oct. 11, 1879 by George A. Newett and John McCarthy. Newett had learned the trade of printing working for The Iron Home. It ceased on Dec. 31, 1881 and was continued by The Iron Agitator..

The Iron Agitator began publishing on Jan. 7, 1882 by George A. Newett. It ceased on Sept 11, 1886 when it changed titles to Iron Ore.

The Peninsular Record began publishing circa 1884 West & Brucker. It ceased on Nov. 11, 1905 and was continued by The Ishpeming Record.

Iron Ore began publishing on Sept. 18, 1886 by George A. Newett. It ceased circa 1951 when it merged with The Reflector to form Iron Ore and Reflector.

Superior-Posten began circa 1888 by a company of the same name. It was in Swedish. It ceased circa 1918.

Pohjantähti moved from Ashtabula, Ohio to Ishpeming by 1888 and was published by Ino Ekman. It was in Finnish.

Työmies began publishing circa 1889. By 1892 it was published by Fred Karinen. It was in Finnish.

Ishpeming Daily Press began publishing on Jan 21, 1891 by Horace J. Stevens. It published daily except Sat. and Sun. The title later shortened to The Daily Press.

Lake Superior Democrat began publishing on Jan. 3, 1891 by Finn & Soults.

The Ishpeming Record began publishing on Nov. 18, 1905 by Peninsular Record Pub. Co. It ceased on May 13, 1932.

The Reflector began publishing circa 1932. It ceased on March 29, 1951 when it merged with Iron Ore to form Iron Ore and Reflector.

The Iron Ore and Reflector began publishing on April 3, 1951 by Iron Ore Printing Co. From Apr. 1951 to Sept. 1952 it was semiweekly. By 1954 the title was shortened to Iron Ore.

Marquette

Lake Superior Journal moved from Sault Ste. Marie to Marquette in late 1855 by John Burt. The entire office was destroyed by fire in 1868. In Aug. 1862 it merged with Lake Superior News to form Lake Superior News and Journal. Its title changed to The Mining Journal.

Lake Superior News began publishing circa 1860 by Charles M. W. Earle. It ceased on Aug. 8, 1862 when it merged with Lake Superior Journal to form Lake Superior News and Journal.

Lake Superior News and Journal began publishing on Aug. 15, 1862 by Dan H. Ball. From 1864 to 1868 it had the title Lake Superior Mining Journal and then changed to Mining Journal.

Marquette Weekly Plain Dealer began publishing circa 1867 by Root & Ewart, and at some point by J.C. Buchanan..

The Mining Journal began publishing on Nov. 28, 1868 by Albert P. Swineford. Swineford eventually moved on to become the governor of Alaska.

The Daily Mining Journal began publishing on June 2, 1884 by A.P. Swineford. It continued till Aug. 31, 1946 when it became Mining Journal.

The Marquette Republican began publishing circa fall 1888.

Marquette Sunday Times began publishing on July 12, 1891.

Weekly Justice began publishing circa Apr. 1897 by the Union Printing Co. On its masthead read “ Devoted to the interests of the masses, and the education of the classes.”

The Marquette began publishing circa Apr. 1899 by Marquette Pub. Co.

The Lake Superior Breeze began publishing in Munising, Alger County circa 1905 and moved to Marquette on Oct. 26, 1906 published by Upper Peninsula Pub. Co.

Marquette Evening News began publishing on Jan. 22, 1907 by Upper Peninsula Pub. Co.

Chronicle began publishing on Aug. 6, 1907 by Chronicle Pub. Co. It published daily, except Sun. It was continued by Evening Chronicle which became The Marquette Daily Chronicle.

The Northern Normal News began publishing on Jan. 15, 1919 by the Northern State Normal School. In July 1927 it became Northern College News and in 1955 Northern News and in 1972 to Northern Michigan University Press.

The Upper Michigan Weekly began publishing on Oct. 12, 1935 by L.R. Messenger.

Local Labor and Union News began publishing on Apr. 20, 1937 “In the interest of Organized Labor and Labor in general.” It began as a weekly, but became a monthly by June, 1937.

Our Sunday Visitor began publishing on Jan 6, 1946 by the Diocese of Marquette. It continued after June 27, 1971 with the titles The U.P. Catholic and The Upper Peninsula Catholic.

The Nishnawbe News began publishing on July 1971 by Native American Students of Northern Michigan University. It was monthly, and became bimonthly circa mid-1973.

The Upper Peninsula Sunday Times : Central Ed began publishing on Mar. 5, 1978 by Panax Corp. It also published a Western Ed. in Iron Mountain, and an Eastern Ed. in Escanaba.

Negaunee

Mining and Manufacturing News began publishing on May 15, 1867 by A.P. Swineford. It later became Lake Superior Mining and Manufacturing News. It ceased on Aug. 15, 1868 and was possible continued by Superior Democrat.

Negaunee Mining Review began publishing on July 28, 1870 by Drake & McLaughlin.

The Negaunee Iron Herald began publishing on Nov. 1 1873 by Clinton G. Griffey. It was Republican.
