(Wayne County and Detroit have a vast and complex newspaper publishing history. The very size of it and work involved has kept me from completing these sections. I'm not done yet, though working hard at it, but I thought I would add what I've done so far. I've included almost no entries from some of the larger newspaper families.)

 

 

Allen Park

The Allen Park Record began publishing circa 1911.

 

Belleville

Bellville Mirador began publishing circa Apr. 1881 by Will W. Secord.

 

The Belleville Enterprise began publishing on Mar. 10, 1886 by Roscoe C. Begole. It ceased on Feb. 23, 1939 and merged with Legal Times, and Romulus Roman, to form Enterprise-Roman and the Legal Times.

 

Enterprise-Roman and the Legal Times began publishing on Mar. 3, 1939 by Beard Newspaper Pub. Co. It ceased on Dec. 31, 1968 and split into Romulus Roman and Belleville Enterprise.

 

Belleville Enterprise was publishing by 1976 by Associated Newspapers Inc.

 

Belleville Area Independent began publishing on Jan. 5, 1995. “Serving the communities of Belleville, Van Buren and Sumpter.”

 

Canton

Canton Observer & Eccentric was publishing by July 1976 by Observer & Eccentric Newspapers. It ceased and was continued by Canton Observer.

 

Dearborn

Dearborn Independent began publishing circa 1901 by Suburban Pub. Co. with Henry Ford as editor. It cease on Dec. 31, 1927.

 

The Dearborn Press began publishing on June 14, 1918 by Press Printing Co. It ceased circa 1977 and was continued by Dearborn Press & Guide.

 

The Fordsun Sun began publishing on Feb. 6, 1926 by Sun Pub. Co. It ceased on Aug. 6, 1926 and was continued by Fordson Independent and Springwells Independent

 

The Fordson Star began publishing on Feb. 13, 1926 by Fordson Star Pub. Co. It ceased circa 1929 and was continued by Dearborn Star.

 

The Dearborn News began publishing on Apr. 25, 1928. It was semiweekly. It ceased circ Nove. 1928 and merged with Fordson Independent and Springwells Independent to become Dearborn Independent.

 

The Dearborn Independent began publishing on Nov. 16, 1928 by a company of the same name. It was triweekly till 1930 when it reduced publication to weekly.

 

The Dearborn Star began publishing on Jan. 18, 1929 by the Star Pub. Co.

 

Dearborn Herald began publishing circa 1936 by a company of the same name.

 

Ford-Dearborn Worker was publishing by 1938 by the Ford-Dearborn Section of the Communist Party, U.S.A. It was a monthly.

 

Dearborn Navy News began publishing on June 30, 1943 by the Students and Ship's Co. of the Naval Training School.

 

Republican Digest began publishing on June, 1946. “Published in the Interest of Truth and good government.”

 

Dearborn Times-Herald was publishing by 1974 by Dearborn Pub. Co.

 

Warrendale Press began publishing on Apr. 4, 1985 by Dearborn Press & Guide. It sometimes published under the title Dearborn Press & Guide and Warrendale Press.

 

Delray

Delray and Springwells Times began publishing circa 1894. It became semiweekly in 1901. It ceased on Aug. 8, 1902 and was continued by Delray Times.

 

The Delray Times began publishing on Aug. 12, 1902 by W.G. Wines. It was semiweekly till Aug. 1903 and then went to weekly. It ceased circa 1906 and was continued by West Detroit and Down River Times.

 

Ecorse

The Ecorse Tribune began publishing circa 1918. By 1935 it was published by E.B. Gibbons.

 

Flat Rock

The Huron Censer began publishing circa 1880 by Rev. N.W. Pierce. It was semimonthly.

 

Garden City

The Garden City Herald began publishing circa 1931 by Thomas M. Dale.

 

The Garden City Review was publishing by Apr. 1932 by Wayne County Pub. Co. In 1944 it absorbed Garden City News. It ceased circa 1960 and merged with Garden City Guardian, to form Garden City Guardian Review.

 

Garden City News began publishing on Feb. 6, 1941 by Joseph Biller. It ceased circa June 1944 and was continued by Garden City Review.

 

Garden City Eagle began publishing on Apr. 5, 1946 by Michael (Mickey) Martin. The masthead said the title was temporary. It ceased on May 3, 1946 and was continued by Garden City Guardian.

 

Garden City Guardian began publishing on May 10, 1946 by Michael (Mickey) Martin. It ceased circa 1960 and merged with Garden City Review, to form Garden City Guardian-Review.

 

Garden City Advance began publishing on Oct. 11, 1946 by Strain Pub. Co.

 

Garden City Guardian-Review began publishing on Feb. 4, 1960 Associated Newspapers. It ceased circa the 1970s.

 

Garden City Observer & Eccentric was publishing by July 1976 by Observer & Eccentric Newspapers. It was semiweekly. It ceased and was continued by Garden City Observer.

 

Grosse Isle

Flight began publishing circa 1942 by the United States Naval Air Station. It was bimonthly.

 

The Ile Camera began publishing on Apr. 16, 1945 “by and for kids.” It published biweekly till 1979 when it went to weekly. In 1999 its publisher was Heritage Newspapers.

 

Grosse Pointe

Grosse Pointe News began publishing on Nov. 7, 1940 by Abbe Press.

 

The Pointer began publishing on Nov. 1975 by Paul D. McCarthy. It was a monthly. After Dec. 1988 its title was lengthened to Pointer News.

 

Grosse Pointe Advertiser began publishing circa 1981 by C & G Pub. It published biweekly.

 

Hamtramck

The Hamtramck News began publishing circa 1903. By 1922 it was published by T.C. Loveless.

 

The New Deal began publishing circa Oct. 1933 by Paul W. Bruske. It ceased on Sept. 2, 1938 and was continued by Plain Dealer.

 

Hamtramck Citizen began publishing on Sept. 7, 1934 edited by A.N. Lewandoski. After July 19, 1935 its title was shortened to Citizen. After Oct. 30, 1936 its title lengthened to Hamtramck N. Detroit Citizen and then returned back to Citizen after Mar. 17, 1939.

 

Plain Dealer began publishing on Sept. 8, 1938 by the Plain Dealer Pub. Co. It ceased on Oct. 10, 1952.

 

Harper Woods

Harper Woods Herald began publishing circa 1948. It ceased circa 1966 and merged with Northeast Detroiter, to form Northeast Detroiter and the Harper Woods Herald published in Detroit.

 

Highland Park

Highland Park Times began publishing circa late 1911 by F.E. Van Black. It ceased circa 1923 and merged with Highland Parker, to form Highland Parker and Highland Park Times.

 

The Highland Park Star began publishing circa Mar. 1913 by R.B. Buek.

 

The Highland Parker began publishing circa 1919 by A.L. Kingsley. It ceased circa 1923 and merged with Highland Park Times, to form Highland Parker and Highland Park Times.

 

Nor'wood Express began publishing on Feb. 11, 1920 by O'Leary & Kingsley.

 

The Highland Parker and Highland Park Times began publishing on Dec. 7, 1923 by A.L. Kingsley. It was semiweekly for a few of its early years. It ceased on May. 14, 1953.

 

The Record began publishing circa Oct. 1932 by J.P. Burkhart. It ceased on Dec. 8, 1932 and merged with Observer to form Record and Observer.

 

The Record and Observer began publishing on Dec. 16, 1932 by Clyde Austin, J.P. Burkhart, James S. Sheehan.

 

The North-End News began publishing circa 1944. By 1968 it was published by the Highland Parker. It ceased circa 1972 and merged with Highland Parker to form Highland Parker and North-End News.

 

The Highland Parker began publishing on May 21, 1953 by a company of the same name. It ceased circa 1972 and merged with North-End News to form Highland Parker and North-End News.

 

Workers’ Power began publishing on Sept. 11, 1970 by International Socialist Pub. Co. It published biweekly till circa 1976 when it went to mostly biweekly. It ceased on Oct. 26, 1978 and was continued by Changes Socialist Monthly.

 

The Paper began publishing on Nov. 23, 1970 by a company of the same name.

 

Michigan Citizen began publishing circa 1978. By 1990 it was published by New Day Pub. It was an African-American paper.

 

Inkster

The Inkster Herald began publishing on June 27, 1924 by George J. Manley.

 

The Inkster Journal was publishing by 1925 by Frank Ames. By 1945 it may have absorbed Wayne County Review.

 

The Ledger-Star was publishing by 1963 by Associated Newspapers, Inc. By 1987 its title was lengthened to Inkster Ledger-Star.

 

Lincoln Park

The Lincoln Parker began publishing circa 1918. By 1948 it was published by William S. Mellus and by Panax Newspaper by 1979.

 

Lincoln Park News was publishing by Mar. 1924

 

The Downriver Reporter began publishing on June 7, 1979 by the striking employees of the Mellus Newspapers and edited by Bob Cochrane. It ceased circa Nov. 1979.

 

Livonia

The Livonian began publishing circa 1940. By 1952 it was published by Sterling Eaton.

 

Livonian Observer and City Post was publishing by 1964 by Paul M. Chandler.

 

Livonia Observer & Eccentric was publishing by 1976 by Observer and Eccentric Newspapers. It was semiweekly. It was continued by Livonia Observer.

 

Livonia Observer was publishing by 1987 by the Observer and Eccentric Newspapers. It was semiweekly.

 

Norris

The Norris Suburban began publishing on Mar. 10, 1876 by Newkirk & Sheeran. It ceased circa 1878.

 

Northville

The Wayne County Record began publishing on July 15,1869 by Samuel H. Little. It was a semi-monthly. It ceased Dec. 10, 1870 and was continued by The Northville Record.

 

The Northville Record began publishing on Dec. 24, 1870 by Samuel H. Little. It began as a semimonthly and became a weekly by 1888.

 

The Northville Saturday Times began publishing circa Aug. 1885 by J.H. Junkin.

 

The Broadsider began publishing circa 1973 by a company of the same name. It published biweekly.

 

The Northville Journal began publishing on July 20, 2000 by Journal Newspapers. It ceased circa Dec. 21, 2000 and merged with Plymouth Journal and Canton Journal to form Journal published in Wayne.

 

Plymouth

Wayne County Review began publishing circa 1878. By Apr. 1879 it was published by J.H. Steers. It ceased on Sept. 3, 1943 and merged with Wayne Dispatch to form Wayne Dispatch and Wayne County Review.

 

The Plymouth Mail began publishing on Sept. 16, 1887 by M. Fred Gray.

 

Plymouth Fair Messenger was publishing by Sept. 1895 by Plymouth Mail and edited by the Women's Christian Temperance Union of Plymouth.

 

The Plymouth Mail and Observer was publishing by July 1967.

 

The Community Crier began publishing circa 1974 by a company of the same name.

 

Plymouth Observer & Eccentric was publishing by July 1976 by Observer & Eccentric Newspapers. It ceased and was continued by Plymouth Observer.

 

Plymouth Observer was publishing by 1977 by Observer and Eccentric Newspapers.

 

The Plymouth Journal began publishing on July 20, 2000 by Journal Newspapers. It ceased on Dec. 21, 2000 and merged with Northville Journal and Canton Journal to form Journal published in Wayne.

 

Redford

The Redford Record began publishing circa 1900 by C.D. Potter. It ceased on Sept. 22, 1971 and was continued by the Redford edition of Suburban News.

 

Redford Bulletin began publishing circa 1943. By 1949 it was published by Advance Newspapers Pub.

 

The Redford Observer began publishing circa 1955 by a company of the same name. By the 1970s it had ceased and was continued by Redford Observer & Eccentric.

 

Redford Observer & Eccentric was publishing by 1976 by the Observer & Eccentric Newspapers. It was semiweekly.

 

River Rouge

River Rouge Herald began publishing circa 1906. By 1971 it was published by Russell C. Durham.

 

Riverview

Shore Line Courier began publishing on Aug. 17, 1964 by a company of the same name. It published biweekly. “Complete coverage of Southgate, Riverview, Trenton, Grosse Ile, Flat Rock, Gibraltar, Rockwood, Woodhaven and most of Brownstown Township.”

 

Romulus

The Romulus Roman began publishing circa 1886. By 1925 it was published by Ira F. Johnson. It cease on Feb. 23, 1939 merged with Belleville Enterprise, and Legal Times (title uncertain), to form Enterprise-Roman and the Legal Times.

 

Southgate

Heritage Sunday began publishing on Aug. 5, 1990 by News-Herald Newspapers.

 

Springwells

The Springwells Tribune began publishing circa 1920 by Charles H. Culver.

 

The Springwells Independent began publishing circa late 1922 by Springwells Printing Service. It ceased circa 1925 and was continued by Fordson Independent and Springwells Independent.

 

The Springwells Star began publishing on Apr. 26, 1924 by Arthur G. Baker. It ceased on Feb. 6, 1926 and was continued by Fordson Star in Dearborn.

 

Trenton

The Centennial began publishing on Apr. 13, 1876 by David W. Bole.

 

The Trenton Times began publishing circa 1887. By 1901 it was published by Walter F. Stokes. It ceased on Feb. 25, 1987 and was continued by Trenton News-Herald.

 

The Trenton News-Herald began publishing on Mar. 4, 1987 by Ernst L. Nagy. It ceased and was absorbed in part by The News-Herald of  Wyandotte.

 

Wayne

Wayne Pilot began publishing on Nov. 18, 1875 by William W. Secord. By Sept. 1876 it was published by Frank H. Pinckney. It was independent.

 

The Wayne Pilot began publishing circa Sept. 1893 by Charles Carpenter. (The relationship to the previous newspaper of the same title is uncertain.)

 

Wayne Tidings began publishing circa 1894 by W.K. Allen.

 

The Wayne Echo began publishing circa 1899 J.F. Cullen.

 

The Wayne Weekly began publishing circa 1914. By 1925 it was published by V.R. Hisey. It ceased circa 1928 and was continued by Wayne Dispatch.

 

Wayne County Audit began publishing circa July 1914 by Regina V. Cullen.

 

The Garden City Times began publishing circa 1926 by Wayne County Pub. Co.

 

The Wayne Dispatch began publishing circa 1928 by Lois Hisey. It ceased circa 1943 and merged with Wayne County Review (of Plymouth) to become Wayne Dispatch and Wayne County Review.

 

Wayne Eagle began publishing circa 1945 by Michael (Mickey) Martin.

 

Norwayne News began publishing circa 1946 by Norwayne residents. “Published every month for and by Norwayne residents as the ‘voice of the people’.”

 

The Journal began publishing on Jan. 11, 2001 by Journal Newspapers.

 

Westland

The Westland Eagle was publishing by May 1966 by Associated Newspapers.

 

Westland Observer & Eccentric was publishing by July 1976 by Observer & Eccentric Newspapers. It was semiweekly.

 

Wyandotte

The Wyandotte Enterprise began publishing circa May 1870 by D.E. Thomas. It initially was printed in Detroit, but printing operations moved to Wyandotte in 1871. It ceased circa Jan. 1873 and was continued by Wayne County Courier.

 

Wayne County Courier began publishing circa Jan. 1873 by Griffin & Nellis. It moved to Detroit by 1880.

 

The Wyandotte Herald began publishing circa 1879 by George Owen, and later by Frank S. Abbot, Henry C. Egabroad, and James Dalton Haven. It ceased on Feb. 19, 1943 and merged with Wyandotte News to form Wyandotte News-Herald.

 

The Wyandotte Record was publishing by 1923 by George Mack Adams.

 

The Gateway Chronicle began publishing circa 1926 by Chronicle Press.

 

Down river Press began publishing circa 1935. It ceased circa 1939 and was continued by Wyandotte Tribune.

 

Wyandotte Tribune began publishing on Oct. 26, 1939 by Frank S. Worthington. It ceased on Oct. 5, 1961 and was absorbed by Wyandotte News-Herald.

 

The Wyandotte News-Herald began publishing circa 1943 by Wyandotte News Co. It published semiweekly till 1959 when it went to weekly. After Apr. 10, 1963 its title shortened to News-Hereald.

 

The News-Herald began publishing on Apr. 17, 1963 by Wyandotte News Co. It ceased on July 22, 1970 when it merged with Guardian (Wyandotte, Mich.) to form News-Herald and the Guardian.

 

The Week-Ender began publishing on Oct. 17, 1964 by the publishers of the News-Herald. It sometimes had the title News-Herald Week-Ender.

 

The News-Herald and the Guardian began publishing on July 29, 1970 by Wyandotte News Co. After Jan. 12, 1972 its title was shortened to Guardian/News-Herald.

 

The Guardian/News-Herald began publishing on Oct. 23, 1974 by Panax Pub. It ceased on Oct. 19, 1977 and was continued by Wyandotte News-Herald.

 

The Wyandotte News-Herald began publishing on Oct. 26, 1977 by Panax Pub. After Apr. 19, 1989 its title was shortened to News-Herald published by Ernest L. Nagy.

 

Wyandotte Independent began publishing on Mar. 8, 1987 by Ernest L. Nagy. It ceased on July 28, 1990 and was continued by Heritage Sunday published in Southgate.
